Drypoint Workshop: Scoil Dara, Kilcock, Co. Kildare

Drypoint Workshop

Scoil Dara, Kilcock, Co. Kildare

On 14th April 2026, tutors David McGinn and Siobhán Cox facilitated a series of drypoint workshops with 120 Transition Year students in Scoil Dara in Kilcock, Co. Kildare with assitance from teachers from the school.

Over the course of two hours, each group of students were introduced to the drypoint etching technique, and were shown examples of etchings made by Black Church Print Studio members.

The students transfered preparatory drawings onto clear drypoint plates using a sharpened nail. They applied ink to the plates, and ran them through the etching press to create a proof print.

After examining the proof prints, the students decided on how to further develop their plates by adding more lines, tone or cross-hatching. The plates were then printed again onto Fabriano paper.

A drypoint plate with black ink on it placed on the bed of an etching press.
