Workshop Series 2024: Stanhope Street Primary School
Diversity / Identity
Stanhope Street Primary School, Dublin 7
Black Church Print Studios artists Caroline Byrne and Siobhán Cox worked on the Diversity / Identity project in 2024 with pupils from Stanhope Primary School in Stoneybatter Dublin 7.
The Diversity / Identity project allowed the children to learn about the diverse cultural backgrounds of pupils in their school community, and to explore and discuss their own neighbourhoods, homes, and families.
Project artists shared contemporary art practice with pupils and worked with a collaborative focus, generating ideas with the group to form a collaborative artwork, process and intervention in the school building.
The artists and the children made mini replicas of houses and apartments using shoe boxes. They also made furniture using other recycled materials.
Session 1: Where do we come from?
Introduction: Spin the wheel. For this game we used a flat cardboard wheel that spins. The wheel was divided up like pizza slices, each slice had the name of the country of origin the children in the class identify with. The wheel was spun and when it stopped on a country we discussed things that are the same and different about that country. The children from this place got a chance to speak first and teach us what they know.
Art: A pen pal. Following the game each child was given a letter from a fictitious pen pal from a country other then their own. They were asked to write/draw what best describes their family, school life and their home.
Session 2 – Our neighbourhood
Introduction: We discussed our neighbourhood, the place where we live. The discussion was about what makes these buildings the same on the outside e.g. windows, doors etc. and thinking about the gardens or yards around the house. Who are their neighbours? Are there shops close by?
Art: Using recycled shoe boxes the children began constructing mini versions of the houses and apartments like the houses and apartmants they live in, they started from the outside and work inward. During this session they painted the boxes, cut in windows and doors and created floors for the houses.
Introduction: Who lives with you? what does your house look like on the inside? In this session topics like sisters, brothers, babies, grandparents, food, religion, family pets were discussed.
Art: The children’s shoe box houses were divided up into 4 rooms: kitchen, living room, bedroom one and two. We explored all range of recycled materials to create miniature house furniture.
