Cruinniu na nÓg 2024

Stanhope Street Primary School, Dublin 7

Black Church Print Studios artists An Gee Chan and Emily Mc Gardle facilitated screenprinted tote workshops for Cruinniu na nÓg with pupils from Stanhope Primary School in Stoneybatter, Dublin 7.

In these workshops, pupils were introduced to the screenprinting technique, and translated their ideas to create personalised tote bags. Learning the principles of the screenprinting process, pupils made a newsprint stencil, and used it as a screenprinting stencil to transfer the negative image onto a tote bag.

This process used safe environmental friendly water-based inks, and created a personalised tote-bag that the children could take away and re-use. All tote bags used were made from organic cotton and sourced locally. The workshop focused on themes of community through the lens of creativity.

In this workshop we aimed to

  • Introduce children to print as an art form.
  • Produce works that express their sensibility and creativity.
  • Work with a collaborative focus, generating ideas as a group and individually.

Crinniú na nÓg 2024 at Black Church Print Studio and Stanhope Primary School

Session 1: Screenprinting demonstration at Stanhope Primary School.

An Gee and Emily visited pupils in Stanhope Primary School for a brief demo of the screenprinting process, and to show examples of screenprinted tote bags. An Gee demonstrated how to create a paper stencil by tearing newsprint. This stencil was then used to screenprint an image onto a tote bag. Pupils were encouraged to brainstorm ideas for their own tote bags which they would print on Cruinniu na nÓg.

Session 2 – Screenprinting on tote bags at Black Church Print Studio.

Two groups of pupils from Stanhope Primary School visited Black Church Print Studio on Cruinniu na nÓg. An Gee and Emily demonstrated the difference between positive and negative images when making stencils for screenprinting. Pupils first sketched their ideas onto sheets of newsprint, and then used scissors to cut the newsprint to make a stencil. They then used their newsprint stencils to print onto tote bags and sheets of paper with the assistance of An Gee and Emily.
